Tianning Buddhist Temple
First constructed during the Tang Dynasty, it was originally named Guangfu Temple, with a history of over 1,300 years. Situated outside of the East Gate of Changzhou, the Tianning Buddhist Temple overlooks the world-renowned Grand Canal, and backs on to the Red Plum Park, the No. 1 Park in Changzhou. It is the largest and best-preserved ancient temple in Changzhou. This temple is characterized by the large halls, large Buddhist statues, large bells, large drums and large cauldrons; hence the name the No. 1 Temple in Southeast China.
Red Plum Park
On the northern side of the Tianning Buddhist Temple, the Red Plum Park sits on the site of the Tianning Buddhist Temple Garden. This park is known for its eight major scenic sights, such as Red Plum Blossoms in Spring, Lotus in the Breeze on the Crooked Pond, and Snow-covered Pines in Solitary Hill. The Red Plum Pavilion in the southeastern part was first constructed in the Tang Dynasty, and the present pavilion was rebuilt in the Qing Dynasty.
On the southeastern corner of the Red Plum Park, the Wenbi Pagoda was first constructed in about 479. It is the oldest architecture in Changzhou, with a copper calabash weighing 1,500 kg at the top. The pagoda is a brick-and-wood structure, 48.38 meters high, with seven stories and eight sides. Each story has four arched gates, with a spiral staircase going to the top. Standing at the top of the pagoda, you can have a panoramic view of the city. The “Wenbi Pagoda at Sunset” is one of the famous scenic sights in Changzhou.
Universal Dinosaur Town
It’s a national base for science education and a national cultural industry demonstration base. A comprehensive theme park with dinosaur as the theme, it integrates the display of exhibits, science popularization, sightseeing, recreation and leisure, and consists of six theme amusement zones, namely “China Dinosaur Hall”, “Returning to Jurassic”, “Happy Street”, “Adventure in the Rainforest”, “Rubra Zone” and “Kukesuke”. It is known as the Oriental Jurassic. The China Dinosaur Hall is the core of the museum. Now it is the special museum devoted to the collection and display of dinosaur fossils of Chinese series.
The park provides over 50 types of amusement projects, such as Going Through Jurassic, Babel, Buddha’s Warrior Attendants, Mad Fire Dragon Drill, Leilong Roller Coaster, Exploration of the Rock Battle Array, Baby Running in Circle, 4D Techniques Film, Water and Fire dynamics, the show of special feats and the performance by elephants from Thailand. All these projects are novel, stimulating and interesting designed with high-tech means, while integrating ecology and environment protection.
The Ruins of Yancheng
Located in the south of Changzhou, about 7 km from the city proper, it is the best-preserved ruins of the ancient city of the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC). The ancient city of Yancheng is composed of three cities and three moats, showing a unique architectural structure among all the city ruins in China. Over 1,000 precious cultural relics were excavated from the ruins, of which the dugout canoe with a history of over 2,800 years is the oldest and best preserved; hence the name the No. 1 Boat on Earth.
About 8 km south of Liyang City, Tianmu lake is composed of two large national reservoirs: Shahe and Daxi reservoirs. As the lake lies at the foot of the Tianmu Mountain, hence the name Tianmu Lake. The main tourist attractions in the lake area include the Yangshan Hill Nature Park, Huli Hill Park, Bao’en Buddhist Temple, No. 1 Scholar Pavilion, Shooting City, Ocean World and Water Amusement Park.
Situated at the confluence of Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Anhui provinces, the South Hill Bamboo Forest Scenic Area has formed five functional sightseeing zones: the Still Lake Recreational Zone, Leisure and Recreational Zone, History and Culture zone, Longevity Culture Zone and Mountaineering & Sightseeing Zone. The main tourist attractions include the Bamboo Forest and Still Lake, Paradise for Little Birds, Ancient Official Path, etc.
Wu-Chu Farming Culture Park
Situated between Tianmu Lake and Bamboo Forest in South Hill, this scenic zone takes the Wu-Chu farming culture as the background, aiming to display the special farming culture. It includes the Farming Display Zone, Daily-utility Zone, Peasants’ Culture Zone; Folk Customs Zone, Handicraft Workshop Zone, Rural Farming Interest Zone, etc. It is an ideal place for you to experience the Wu-Chu farming culture and traditional farming life.
