Tips for Visiting China’s National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA)

The National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) is also known as the National Grand Theatre and colloquially described as the “Giant Egg”. It is the largest architecture with a vaulted roof in the world. The NCPA consists of the Opera House, the Concert Hall, the Theatre, the Multi-functional Theatre, the Olive Hall, exhibition halls and a huge lobby.

Tips for visiting the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA):

1. Getting There

The exact location is: No.2 West Chang’an Avenue, Xicheng District, Beijing. It is in the center of the city, very close to Tiananmen Square. It is easy to find and accessible by all means of public transport. The most convenient is the No.1 subway line. Get out at the “C” exit of Tiananmen Square West subway station.

No.1 subway line hours: (starting from Pingguoyuan Station) first train at 5:09, last train at 22:55; (from Sihuidong Station) first train at 5:05, last train at 23:15.

2. Opening Hours

The NCPA opens six days a week (including national holidays) for venue visits, from 9:00-17:00. It is closed on Monday.

3. Tickets

Tickets for performances can be purchased on the NCPA official website and collected on site. Or you can buy the tickets on site and children under the height of 1.2m (including 1.2m) can get half price tickets. But they must be accompanied by adults, and the half-price tickets are only available at the box offices at the North Gate.

Tickets are not refundable once sold. Payments in cash are recommended at NCPA box offices. There is ATM of the Bank of China in NCPA.

With the visiting ticket, you can watch the public space; enjoy the architecture and art exhibitions, and visit the halls that are open on that day for public space performances in the specific period of time.

4. Guided Tours

An English-language guided tour costs 200 yuan and must be ordered in advance.

5. Camera and Bags

You can carry a camera during the visit. Small bags are also allowed, but the large ones have to be kept in the cloakroom at the North Gate.

6. Food and Beverage

You are not allowed to bring food and beverage into the NCPA. There is a café on the first floor and also a western restaurant on F4 at your service.

7. Shopping

You can get all kinds of souvenirs from the art souvenir shops, including the NCPA Souvenir Shop, the Audiovisual Shop, the TT-Art Bookstore, the NCPA Drama-Artwork Shop, and the Franz Artwork Shop. The art souvenir shops runs outdoors of the ground floor of the Concert Hall from north to south.

8. Toilet

Toilet facilities are in the North Gate lobby: men on the east side and women on the west.
