The Lutheran Church in Qingdao

The Qingdao Lutheran Church is located on a hill at 15 Jiangsu Road in Shinan District of Qingdao, Shandong Province, with beautiful Signal Mountain Park nearby to the east. The church is a magnificent building of western medieval castle style, and it had an identical twin in Germany that was destroyed during World War II.

The Lutheran Church, formally called the Gospel Church, was designed by German architect. The construction began in 1908 and completed in 1910. The church as a whole appeared respectfully in harmonious color. The roof is covered with red ceramic tiles while the top of the bell tower is in green, and yellow walls have wave lines decorated with granite in mushroom form.

Situated on a scenic terrace where a broad sea view can be taken in sight, the church covers 1,000 square meters, featuring with a bell tower and an auditorium. The bell tower, commonly called “Clock Tower”, is 39.10 meters high. On top of which you can get a view of the picturesque seascape. Big clock was mounted on three sides of the bell tower, striking the hours day and night and adding more mystery and decency to the solemn church. The auditorium inside is 18 meters high, built in arch roof with pendant lamps. The floor is paved with dark red ceramic tiles. Decorated very exquisitely and elegantly, it gives people a feeling of sanctity as people in it. It is no doubt a perfect work of Christian architecture. The spacious and bright auditorium can hold 1,000 people in service, and it is divided into two layers of upstairs and downstairs. On the second floor formerly were the choir seats and pipe organ. Underground are the boiler room and two exits to the back yard.

There are two two-story buildings in the church yard. One is ancillary church, and the other is the residence of preachers. The square in front is flat and broad with trees and many kinds of western buildings around, which further set off the church’s magnificence. Distant mountains, nearby trees, green ceilings and yellow walls are looming in the morning mist at dawn, which makes you feel like in an exotic land at this moment. As you walk up on the narrow steps of stone hill, the church’s solid and thick wall, half-circle and arched granite window frames, sloping red roofs and green-spire bell tower come into view. The foundation made of thick granites is dignified and rough, which outlines the church clear and concise and adds an aesthetic feeling characteristic of religious building.

The Lutheran Church is a famous religious building of Qingdao and a major historic and cultural site under provincial protection. The religious activities of the church are active. On Sunday morning the sound of the church bell can be heard in a far distance.
