The Shanghai Museum is mainly a museum for ancient arts. At present it is divided into ten sections, including: ancient Chinese bronzes, sculpture, ceramics, jades, seals, calligraphy, coin and currency, paintings, Ming and Qing-dynasty furniture, and crafts of China’s national minorities. The exterior of the museum, utilizing the shape of an ancient bronze ding, has an antique flavor.

This museum has collected and displayed more than 400 instruments. It has 4 parts, the Chinese Ancient Instruments, the Present Chinese Instruments, the Instruments of China’s Minority Nationalities and the Instruments of Foreign Minority Nationalities. The musical instruments of the foreign minority nationalities are from Korea, India, Japan, Indonesia, Thailand, Russia, Australia and West African countries and regions.

Shanghai Natural Wild-Insect Kingdom natural_wild_insect_kingdom

It is the first of its kind in China. The birds and the bees, the beetles and the butterflies, all your usual creepy crawlies are on display in this kingdom. It houses several galleries, including a tropical rainforest and a reptile cave. Located on the first floor of the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, Shanghai History Museum adopts the display with “real objects in the scenes” supplemented with high-tech methods, combining cultural relics, stage properties, models, sound and light into one. The museum consists of 7 parts: The Origin of Huating (ancient Shanghai); Features of the Urban City; Glimpses of the Open Port; a 10-mile Street of Foreign Flavor; Old Traces on the Sea; an Exhibition of Architecture; and Good Times of Csrs and Carriages. The exhibition demonstrates to visitors the folk customs and habits of old Shanghai citizens.

Shanghai Postal Museum postal_museum

Inside the Shanghai Postal Museum, the first postal museum in China, there is the duplicated horse-drawn carriage used in 1909 and the truck model used in 1917, reappearing the postal development and changes. In the museum there is also a postage stamp hall, with stamps of the only existing copy, also precious stamps and designs.

The Museum of Natural Sciencesnatural_sciences

Shanghai Geological Museumgeological_museum

The Shanghai Geological Museum, used to be called “The Back Garden of Pudong International Airport”, is only 15 minutes drive from Pudong International Airport. A lot of wonderful mineral crystals, such as Calcite crystal, Quarts crystal and Fluorite crystal collected in the museum are shared with the public. The red gypsum crystal comes from an ore hole which is over 600 meters underground and it took 5 years of explosion. The intergrowth ore of calite and green fluorite weight up to 1.5 tons. There is a huge wooden fossil tree discovered in Xinjiang, its intact trunks is 38 meters long and its girth is nearly 3.6 meters.

C.Y. Tung Maritime Museutung_maritime

It houses the Chinese Maritime History Gallery and the C.Y. Tung Gallery. The former contains a permanent exhibition of maps, photographs, archival material, maritime trade routes and their artifacts, reflecting China’s maritime history since the Neolithic Period. Through the permanent display of objects, photographs, archival material, and ship models, the C.Y. Tung Gallery attempts to portray the legendary life of C. Y. Yung, the one of the “Seven Sea Barons of the World”.

Shanghai Museum of Public Securitypublic_security

Shanghai Museum of Public Security is the first one of this kind in China. It includes 9 exhibition halls with a collection of about 3000 pieces from the late Qing Dynasty till now. Huang Daopo Memorial Hallhuangdaopo

The Memorial Hall is composed of 3 exhibition rooms. The main room is the display of photos, written text and household commodities that exhibit the life story of Huang Daopo and her contribution to China’s textile industry. The other 2 rooms are the display of the changes in spinning and weaving tools, machines and cotton-made products of different periods.

Exhibition Hall of Shanghai Aerospaceaerospace

Wulixiang – Shikumen Open Housewulixiang

Wulixing means “home” in Shanghai dialect. “Open House” in English refers to the custom of neighbours informally dropping in for a visit to one’s home. “Open House” follows on in meaning from “Open Invitation”. The “Wulixiang” museum at Shanghai Xintiandi presents an authentic recreation of a typical Shikumen house built in the 1920’s, it offers a place to cherish the old Shanghai and recall the past events.
