Qufu International Confucius Cultural Festival, started in 1984, is held every year from September 26 to October 10 in Qufu, Shandong Province, to commemorate the birthday of Confucius.
Confucius, born on August 27 in lunar calendar (late September of solar year) more than 2500 years ago in Qufu, was a great educator and philosopher and the founder of Confucianism. He had great influence on China’s political, cultural and social environment for thousands of years. The most outstanding achievement of Confucius was in the field of education. It was he who first set up private schools and received students from all walks of life regardless of their social status.
With the development of the Chinese traditional culture, and the promotion of tourism and the economy as the themes, the festival has been warmly welcomed by domestic and foreign tourists. During the festival, various kinds of cultural and tourism activities are held, such as the grand worshipping ceremony at which large-scale ancient music and dances to commemorate Confucius will be performed, large activities to offer sacrifices to Confucius, exhibitions of calligraphy, the study of Confucian culture, and taking a tour by ancient style chariot, etc.
While you are in Qufu, the birthplace of Confucius, it’s a good opportunity to visit the Temple and Cemetery of Confucius and the Kong Family Mansion, which were included in the World Heritage List in 1994.
