Qingdao holds many annual festivals and events, such as the famous Qingdao International Beer Festival, Qingdao International Sailing Week, Qingdao International Marine Festival, Qingdao Haiyun Nunnery Sugar Ball Fair, and so on, which have attracted lots of tourists from home and abroad.
Qingdao International Beer Festival
Qingdao’s beer culture has a long history. The Qingdao International Beer Festival, started in 1991, opens in the Qingdao International Beer City on the second weekend in August every year and lasts for 16 days. The festival is the grandest beer party in Asia, featuring the Oriental characteristics and integrating tourism, economy, trade, science, technology and sports. Major activities during the festival include opening ceremony, beer tasting, carnival entertainment, float parades, cultural and sports activities, beer drinking contests and closing ceremony, making the festival a fun-filled summer event. Of course, the most interesting thing is to taste various kinds of beer! Hundreds of beer of world-known brands from dozens of countries and over 3 million tourists from around the world attend the festival every year.
Qingdao International Sailing Week
Located at the southern tip of the Shandong Peninsula with the Yellow Sea to the south, Qingdao was entitled as the Sailing Capital of China after hosting the 2008 Olympic Sailing Regatta. The Qingdao International Sailing Week, started in 2009, is held on the third saturday in August every year.
The Fifth Qingdao International Sailing Week, held from Aug 17 to 27, 2013 at the Qingdao Olympic Sailing Center, consisted of three competitions: the Mayor Cup International Sailing Boat Rally, the Qingdao International Sailing Competition and the Qingdao International OP Sailing Camp and Competition.
Qingdao International Marine Festival
The Qingdao International Marine Festival is the only festival in China with an oceanic theme. Launched in 1999, it has been held in July every year since then. The activities include opening ceremony, joint performances, marine culture recreational activities, marine scientific and technological activities, marine sports, marine tourism activities, and marine catering activities. The Qingdao International Marine Festival has become a global platform for communication and cooperation in marine technology, culture and entertainment.
Qingdao Haiyun Nunnery Sugar Ball Fair (Qingdao Haiyun Nunnery Tangqiu Fair)
During the development of Qingdao City, many temple fairs were formed. Of them, Haiyun Nunnery Sugar Ball Fair with a history of more than 500 years is one of the most famous and represents the traditions and customs of the city. It developed from the temple fair of Haiyun Nunnery, which is located in Sifang District. At that time, many vendors gathered around the nunnery selling Sugar Ball (called Tanghulu by Beijingers), which are sugarcoated hawthorns on a stick, hence the name.
This yearly event resumed in 1990. It is held on the 16th day of the first month on the Chinese calendar and last for three days. During the fair, you can enjoy various kinds of folk art performances including lion dances, operas, puppet shows, juggling and walking on stilts, while tasting the most popular sugarcoated hawthorn and hundreds of snacks from all over the country. There are also all kinds of handicrafts. Nowadays, the Qingdao Haiyun Nunnery Sugar Ball Fair has been listed as one of the top ten folk customs fairs throughout China.
Qingdao Beizhai Cherry Festival
The Beizhai Cherry Festival at Mount Lao, started in 1996, is held at the end of May or in early June every year and lasts for about 15 days. Beizhai, located in the northern part of the Laoshan District, is near the future site of the 2014 Qingdao International Horticultural Exposition in a fertile valley along Bin Hai Expressway. There are countless cherry trees around Beizhai, most of which are cultivated by local farmers. During the festival, the farmers will open their orchards to the public where you can pick and eat as many cherries as you can for a set fee.
Qingdao Daze Mountain Grape Festival
Daze Mountain, known as “home to grapes”, lies at the northern border of Pingdu City, Qingdao. The Daze Mountain Grape Festival is held in early September and lasts for about two months. It combines modern agriculture with eco-tourism. During the festival, you can taste the best Daze grapes while enjoying a green tour. And there are also various activities, such as the Daze photo show, the grape tasting competition and the folk art performance.
