Recommended Route: Yuyuan Tourist Mart – People’s Square – Nanjing Road – The Bund – Oriental Pearl Tower – Xintiandi

Yuyuan Tourist Mart

Yuyuan Tourist Mart, commonly known as the “City God Temple” among the Shanghai people, is a representative attraction in Old City of Shanghai, integrating sightseeing, catering and shopping.

How to get there: You can take Metro Line 10 and get off at Yuyuan Garden Stop.

Yuyuan Garden, built in 1559, is a famous classical garden in Jiangnan, featuring its ponds, walkways, bridges and rockeries.

If you want to explore in depth, you can take a walk on Shanghai Old Street which has a history of 700 years. The earliest group of banks, silverware shops and wine shops were all born here. Up to now, the houses of ancient architectural style still retain on both sides of the street.

People’s Square

You can take a taxi or walk from the Yuyuan Garden to the People’s Square, which is a large public square just off of Nanjing Rd. in the Huangpu District of Shanghai. The People’s Square centers on Office Hall of the People’s Government of Shanghai Municipality with surrounding landmark buildings, such as Shanghai Museum, Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Center and Shanghai Grand Theater.

Shanghai Museum

The Shanghai Museum is a museum of ancient Chinese art, with a collection of over 120,000 pieces. The exterior design of the museum is featured with a round dome and a square base, symbolizing the ancient Chinese philosophy that the square earth is under the round sky.

Nanjing Road

You can walk from the People’s Square to the Nanjing Road, which is known as the No. 1 Street in China. The 1,033-meter-long Pedestrian Walkway on Nanjing Road lies between the Bund and the People’s Square. There are over 600 shops on both sides of the walkway, such as the Shanghai No. 1 Department Store, Laofengxiang Gold & Jewelry Shop, and Maochang Optical Shop, etc.

The Bund

Then, you can walk from the Nanjing Road to the Bund. Facing the Huangpu River, the Bund totally extends about 1.5 km. There are 52 buildings of different styles on its west side. Although they were not designed by the same designer and not built in the same period, the architectural tone is fundamentally unified and harmonious, which makes people fell graceful and luxury. Strolling along the river bank, you can enjoy the beautiful, gentle fashionable and modern unique qualities of the Huangpu River in Shanghai.

Oriental Pearl Tower

Thereafter, you can take Sightseeing Tunnel to reach the other side of the river; or take Metro Line 2 to reach Pudong. Enjoying international buildings on Binjiang Avenue in Puxi is another different feeling.

At 468 m high, the tower features 11 spheres, big and small. The two biggest spheres have diameters of 50 m for the lower and 45 m for the upper; the highest sphere is 14 m in diameter.

To go back to Puxi, you can take Metro Line 2. Today, our last stop is Xintiandi, the avant-garde fashion landmark in Shanghai. The exterior appearance of buildings in Xintiandi at best retains the same as Shikumen buildings in the 19th century while the interior is decorated in accordance with the modern lifestyle of the 21st century. Xintiandi has an active nightlife on weekdays as well as weekends. Cafes, restaurants, music bars, fashion outlets, and movie theaters all congregate here. Most of the cafes and restaurants feature both indoor and outdoor seatings.
