Hainan Travel Guide

Hainan is China’s most southerly province and the second largest island after Taiwan, with Haikou as its provincial capital. Known throughout China as the “eco-island”, Hainan has a first class natural environment with ocean, wildlife, plants and tourism resources. And it is the only tropical island in China, with an average annual temperature between 22-26 ℃. Sun, sea, beach, fresh air and a green environment make this unique tropical island into an ideal vacation paradise. Furthermore, it’s also reputed as the “Sun Island”, “Healthy Island”, “Romantic Honeymoon Island”, “Sports Island”and China’s “International Tourism Island”.

Wonderful Ocean Sports

With the water temperature averaging 26 ℃ all year round and the visibility of 10 meters and up, Hainan is a perfect place for water sports. Yalong Bay, Wuzhizhou Island, West Island, Sanya Dadonghai and Xiaodonghai, Holiday Beach in Haikou and Fenjiezhou Island (Boundary Islet) in Lingshui are all the best diving spots as well as great places for parasailing. In 2010, Shimei, Riyue and Nanwan Bays in Wanning hosted the first China International Surfing Festival. Over 40 competitors from 14 countries including surf stars like Troy Mothershead and Mark Mathews were in attendance.

Magical Tropical Rainforest

There are few places left in the world that can be said to be as unspoiled as Hainan Island. Hainan has the best preserved environment throughout China, with over 58﹪of the island covered by forest. The eco-tourism and tropical rainforest ventures such as trekking in the rainforest are extremely popular. If you are looking for a magical trip of exploration into the rainforest, it is highly recommended that you visit the Qixianling (Ridge of Seven Fairies) National Forest Park in Baoting County, Jianfengling National Forest Park in Ledong County, the rainforests on Wuzhi Mountain (Five-Finger Mountain) in Wuzhishan County, Limu Mountain in Qiongzhong County and the Tropical Heaven Forest Park at Yalong Bay in Sanya.

Luxury Cruise Ship

Surrounded on all sides by water and located at the same latitudes as Florida, Hainan is also the home port to a number of cruise ships. The two cities of Haikou and Sanya are at the forefront of the development of China’s cruise ship industry. The international cruise ship pier in Sanya has the ability to take ships with displacement of up to 100,000 tons. It would be a great experience to choose one of the cruise lines operating out of Haikou or Sanya for business meetings or relaxation with friends and family. It is also possible to have your wedding on a yacht, or rent a yacht for a party or sightseeing. Another uniquely “hard to imagine” and even “harder to forget” opportunity is the helicopter sightseeing tour.

Unique Culture and Folk Customs

Hainan is one of the few places in China with large populations of ethnic minorities, primarily Li, Miao and Hui. And Hainan is the only region in China inhabited by Li people, who are famous for their weaving techniques, brocade and embroidery. If you want to experience the rich Li culture, it is highly recommended that you go to the Binglang Valley where you will be able to find out the ancient culture in the tattooed faces of the old women, enjoy the music of the bamboo flutes, and join in the Firewood Gathering Dance (or called Bamboo Pole Dance).
