Dali Natural Scenery

Located some 400km (250 miles) west of Kunming, Dali, a rustic town, is perched at the foot of the towering Cangshan Mountain and overlooks lovely Erhai Lake. Its typically sunny weather, sleepy atmosphere, and gorgeous sunsets have made it one of Yunnan’s most popular destinations.

Cangshan Mountain

Cangshan Mountain and Erhai Lake are the two main scenic spots of Dali. Cangshan Mountain enjoys great reputation for its snow, clouds, springs and peaks. There are 19 peaks on the mountain, most of which have an altitude of over 3,500 meters. The highest summit named Malong Peak is 4,122 meters (13,524 feet) high, with the top covered by snow all year round, but the halfway up the mountain is a natural botanical garden with dense trees and various flowers, vying with one another for beauty. At the foot of the mountain is the pastoral farmland. A large number of historical ruins and cultural legacies have been preserved in this area.

Erhai Lake

Erhai Lake, a 250 square kilometer (100 square miles) lake sitting at 1,972 m (6,470 ft) above sea level, is Dali’s most obviously compelling natural attraction with elegant landscapes as well as a famous highland lake in Yunnan. Since it has a shape of an ear, it gets the name Erhai (Ear Lake). The lake and Cangshan Mountain enhance each other’s beauty. On the kind of sunny day the lake is a profound shade of aquamarine, and when the weather turns colder it is crowned from the far side by the snow-frosted peaks of the Cangshan Mountain.

Along the bank of the lake there are Erhai Park, Little Putuo Island and Xizhou scenic spots and inside the lake are the Golden Shuttle Island (Jinsuo Dao), Nanzhao Folklore Island and Chiwen Island.
